Dr. George Rogers Clark Todd – brother-in-law of Abraham Lincoln & Confederate Army surgeon

Dr. George Rogers Clark Todd was the brother-in-law of President Abraham Lincoln, but the two never agreed, with Todd once saying that Lincoln was “one of the greatest scoundrels unhung.” Todd had worked tirelessly around the clock to save lives for several days following the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863, bandaging wounds, administering anesthesia, and removing injured body parts.

Todd married Martha Lyles from the Camden area. Some sources indicate she lived in Fairfield County during that time. It’s also reported that Dr. Todd had practiced medicine in Barnwell, where he died in 1900. Other sources state that he had a medical practice in Camden.

Today, Dr. George Rogers Clark Todd is laid to rest at the Quaker Cemetery in Camden, in Section 17—plot 1.

If you have never visited the grounds, please be respectful. It’s a beautiful and historic cemetery. On your way in, stop by and see the grave of Agnus of Glasgow.
