When the area was flooded to make way for the lake in the early 1960s, graveyards, roads, and buildings were lost forever beneath the serene surface of Lake Hartwell on the border of South Carolina and Georgia. But the biggest mystery that lurks on the bottom may be the small town of Andersonville. Yes, Ghost Island is on the lake as well, but this place is even more mysterious, as some people believe the ghost town is still very much alive.
Andersonville may be invisible to the many boaters who crowd the lake, but the legend still lives on. Over the years, people have whispered tales that parts of the town are still intact.
Divers in the area have reported feeling a strange presence watching them as they descend near the site. Others have reportedly seen phantom lights from the waters, while others have claimed to have seen apparitions walking the nearby shoreline.
It only begs one question: are the spirits of Andersonville past still lingering amongst the living?
