Chimney Rock is a magical place, and according to some reports dating back to the early 1800s, it can also be a ghostly area, where many strange things have occurred over the years with no explanation. Reports of paranormal activity date back to 1806, if not earlier, when people observed a crowd of angelic beings in white robes rising to the top of the mountain, hovering in the air before descending and disappearing into the heavens above.

In the summer of 1811, another strange event occurred over several evenings, when people observed a battle between two armies riding winged horses circling each other above Chimney Rock. On the final evening, the two armies clashed, with the sounds of metal and the screams of the wounded echoing throughout the rugged mountain terrain.
This sighting received so much attention that a public meeting was held in nearby Rutherfordton to discuss the matter with witnesses.
