One lake I receive many questions about is Lake Lure. After all, Dirty Dancing was filmed there, and not to mention, the place became an overnight success in the late 1920s. The area is even known for its haunted locations. But have you ever considered what lies forgotten at the bottom? Many items have been discovered after Hurricane Helene, including a rusted-out vehicle that appeared to be a 1920s Model T, and a 32-foot wooden boat.
Most lakes have a lost town at the bottom of them, and Lake Lure is no different. The Town of Buffalo was a farming and mining community in the Whiteside Valley, as it was known at the time. It’s believed fewer than 200 people called it home, and it served as a brief stop for travelers. It earned its name from the people who lived there because the mountain they saw looked like a buffalo.
When the dam was completed in September 1926, the area was flooded.
