The Kentucky Meat Shower of 1876

On March 3, 1876, meat fell from the sky near Olympia Springs, Kentucky, sometime before noon. No one knows exactly the type of meat that hit the ground that day or even the origin. There are some explanations that the meat was lung tissue, but it remains a subject of speculation and mystery. Various reports suggested it was beef, lamb, deer, bear, or horse.

According to the incident, a farmer’s wife was making soap on the front porch of the couple’s residence when she reported seeing chunks of what appeared to be red meat hit the ground. According to reports, the couple believed the event was a sign from God.

The phenomenon was written about in The New York Times.
