The Ghostly Lady of Gray Court

In Gray Court, South Carolina, near Exit 10 on Interstate I-385 in Laurens County, is a site believed to be haunted by a ghostly woman.

Author Tally Johnson penned a section of the tale in his Ghosts of the South Carolina Upcountry book on page 52. Again, if you do not have his books, I would encourage you to order them.

Johnson writes about two versions of the story, but I will cover one here. Many years ago, an elderly woman was hit in the face by a neighborhood kid, who visited her residence under “the impression of borrowing eggs.”

The troubled youth was under the impression that the woman had money stashed away, so he struck her to force her to reveal the hiding place of the loot. Unfortunately, he walloped her, causing the woman to fall “dead at the culvert, which is located near the site of the old lady’s chicken coop.”

Supposedly, if you enter the tunnel on rainy days, you will hear the old lady’s cries of pain echoing throughout.

And “if you do drive into the tunnel and turn your car off, it will not restart, and the ghostly woman may appear sitting beside you.”
