Throughout the years, people traveling Cross Keys Highway, in between Laurens and Union, South Carolina, have reported seeing a ghostly woman in the window at the Cross Keys House.
Many believe the spirit is Mrs. Mary Ann Elizabeth Bobo Whitmire-Davis, who met Confederate Jefferson Davis when he fled Richmond, Virginia, in April 1865. Davis, along with some members of his cabinet, stopped at the house in search of a hot meal.
Davis’s family eventually left Richmond at the end of the Civil War on the “Treasure Train,” which stopped in Chester, South Carolina, and was forced to offload onto wagons due to the railroad tracks to the south being torched.
People have reported seeing lights that mysteriously turn on in the Cross Keys House late at night, and some motorists down this rural highway have observed a woman glaring back at them as they pass by.
