The 1996 Cold Case of Debra Ann Smith in Batesburg, SC

Debra Ann Smith was a 30-year-old mother of four when she was murdered on January 29, 1996, in Batesburg, South Carolina. At the time, it was reported that Debra was eight months pregnant when she left her residence around 5:30 p.m. to meet someone.

Unfortunately, Debra Smith’s body was found by two brothers walking downtown to grab a quick bite to eat. She was found on Bernard Street, roughly two hours after she left her home.

Debra had been strangled, and according to reports, “police believe her murder may have been motivated by her pregnancy.” Authorities reportedly had a suspect in the case, but were unable to file charges due to insufficient evidence to support the charges against him.

Debra Ann Smith and her family deserve justice. Someone knows the person who killed Smith on that winter evening 29 years ago. The case remains cold, but it can be solved today.
