The Legend of Stonepile Gap

Stonepile Gap in Lumpkin County, Georgia, in Dahlonega, is home to a popular legend.

The legend says that Cherokee Trahlyta was told by the Witch of Cedar Mountain of a natural spring that would keep the young woman beautiful and young. Word quickly traveled about her growing beauty, and soon men came across the land to seek her hand in marriage.

After Trahlyta refused Wahsega, she was kidnapped and taken far away from her home. Days turned to years, and she slowly faded away from memory. Her final request was to be buried in her homestead.

Her dying desire was to bestow good fortune on others. If you should find yourself in this area, please place a stone on her grave and make a wish to the Spirit of Eternal Youth and Happiness.

It’s said that while Trahlyta may have physically left this world, her spirit stayed behind. Her ghostly figure with pale white cloth and long black hair has been seen along roads around Cedar Mountain and her gravesite.
