Springwood Cemetery in downtown Greenville is rich with history. Over the years, the old cemetery has been associated with several ghostly tales, including the tragic story of Fannie Heldmann.
Heldmann died at just 25 years old, when she drowned herself in a section of the Reedy River, known as “ten-foot hole.” The story is a sad one, but in 1889, Heldmann was set to be married, but her father, George, rejected the marriage. Fannie was locked in her room after she tried to inflict bodily harm on herself.
A few weeks later, she escaped and ran to the Reedy River, around 7 p.m., while others, including her father, searched the area. Shortly after 8 p.m., her lifeless body was pulled from the river and buried at Springwood Cemetery in the family plot.
People who have visited the grounds have seen a white mist near her grave, and others have heard the ghostly sounds of children.
