South Carolina can be heaven for the millions that call the Palmetto State home, but sometimes, even paradise has a dark side. Converse University is reportedly home to several buildings with paranormal activity. Ironically, the college is situated near the most haunted cemetery in the area, Hells Gate, located on East Main Street in Spartanburg.
The more famous specters are Hazel B. Abbott and the ghastly woman in white. The Hazel B. Abbott Theater is haunted by its namesake, and Pell Hall is home to the woman in white who jumped from her window to run away and elope with her lover. Unfortunately, she met her demise in the fall. It is also said to be the home of Betty Payne, who hanged herself in her room.
No matter your thoughts on the paranormal, it sounds like Converse College is full of apparitions who are dying to meet you.
