The Spirits of Poogan’s Porch

Charleston, South Carolina, is a beautiful historic city with numerous ghostly tales, and according to many, it is home to one of the most haunted restaurants in the country. Poogan’s Porch is a delicious Southern cuisine that opened in 1976. It is a favorite among locals, visitors, and celebrities alike. But just like their food, they are known to have a few spirits that call the 1888 old Victorian house at 72 Queen Street home.

Two specters allegedly haunt the premises. The first is the namesake of the restaurant itself. Poogan was a real dog that greeted customers until he died in 1979. Today, the beloved pooch still hangs around looking for a pat on the head.

The most famous may be the ghost of Zoe. Zoe St. Amand lived in the residence with her sister in the early 1900s. She served as a teacher and sought true love, but that would not be in the cards. Many viewed the two sisters as social outcasts during this time. When her sister tragically died in 1945, it left poor Zoe distraught and depressed. One evening, Zoe ventured into the streets, shouting her sister’s name in a mental breakdown, and local authorities escorted her to the hospital, where she lived out the rest of her days.

It is said the ghost of Zoe still haunts this establishment, searching for her sister in the afterlife. People have seen her wandering around the house. Others have claimed to see an elderly woman in a black dress standing in the top-floor window.
