The name Sleepy Hollow is enough to strike fear into anyone, but adding an alleged ghost story takes it up a few notches. Legend says a man met his demise during the Civil War in the area, and now he haunts the roadway with a missing arm. Late at night, his apparition emerges, crying out for help from anyone brave enough to answer his call.
(No evidence exists of any deaths or skirmishes in this area during the Civil War.)
Acclaimed South Carolina author Tally Johnson has another theory in his book Ghosts of the South Carolina Upcountry. “The second theory came from one of my friends, Susan Hoff, a coworker and a native of the area. She claims the man is a local eccentric who was prone to harass passing motorists after losing an arm in an industrial accident.”
No matter your thoughts, Sleepy Hollow Lane near Lockhart is a spooky good time. Who knows, you may encounter the specter and develop a different theory.
