The Haunting of the 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa: Lake Lure, North Carolina

Western North Carolina in October is gorgeous, with foliage changing colors. A quick drive on U.S. 64 from Hendersonville through Chimney Rock Village and into Lake Lure is the perfect nature therapy. Another treasure awaits travelers across from beautiful Lake Lure on the edge of the small mountain community. The majestic, historic 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa sits on a plot of land that has remained unchanged for the past ninety-four years. Many may recall scenes from a blockbuster movie starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, which were filmed near this hotel in the 1980s. However, the famous Lake Lure Inn and Spa may be better known for its long list of non-paying ghostly residents who are still the life of the party inside.

Construction on the inn started in 1925. It officially opened the same year the town was incorporated in 1927. The 1929 stock crash hit the area hard for several years, with investors running and scrapping plans for an airfield, a yacht club, and a zoo. The only things left in town were the lake, the arcade, and the Lake Lure Inn. Notable past guests, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Calvin Coolidge, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, have stayed here.

A step through the doors is like being teleported to 1930. The Lantern was able to visit the old inn today to learn more about the property, history, and all the ghostly tales. One legend claims that a couple stayed at the resort for their honeymoon, but the bride caught the eye of a police officer in the lounge area. As the night went on, she became more flirtatious, causing her husband to go into a fit of rage at what occurred before his eyes. As the married couple retired to their room for the evening, a fight ensued. Two different versions of the story exist that led to the young woman’s demise. One tale says she was shot to death by her husband. Another legend says she was the victim of a stabbing. Back then, the rooms inside were very spacious. Today, this particular room has undergone renovations from one unit to two. Guests staying there have reported smelling roses and being awakened by a tickle on their feet (sounds like a good time).

It is an eerie good time. Please ensure you request rooms 217 and 218. Your significant other will appreciate a relaxing, well-deserved vacation. Have you ever stayed at the 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa?
