Who doesn’t like great food with a touch of the unexplained layered on top? Fort Mill is a historic town, cut from the cloth of the textile industry in northern York County, near the North Carolina border. The area is renowned for its excellent schools, rich history, and abundant southern charm.
Everyone loves finding that perfect food dining spot with a fantastic atmosphere. Z Bakery and Café is located in a historic home, having opened nine years ago in its current location. It is a stop on the Lanterns and Legends Walking Tour, sponsored by the Fort Mill History Museum, which takes place every October. It is a tour for anyone interested in supporting a great cause and learning the history of Fort Mill.
We spoke with Kristen Zimmerman, one of the owners of Z Bakery and Café, to learn more about the spooky goings-on inside the establishment.
As you may imagine, the workday begins early, with preparations for the morning crowd. Zimmerman said that staff have reported hearing their names called with lights flickering. She even added that doors will slam and swing open.
The police station is a few doors down and has responded to calls when the security alarm abruptly goes off when the restaurant is closed. When they show, all doors are locked and secured.
One of the creepier incidents occurred when Zimmerman’s grandmother caught a middle-aged woman with a little girl downstairs on camera. Usually, that wouldn’t be odd, considering it is a restaurant, but during this time, Z Bakery and Cafe was closed with its doors locked.
While all ghostly encounters are considered alleged, it is safe to say that Z Bakery and Café, located at 124 Confederate Street in Fort Mill, has the perfect recipe for southern hospitality, with plenty of food and a hint of ghostly love sprinkled in.
