The Witch of Bonaire, Georgia

Bonaire is not a location in Georgia; however, the area is home to a few spooky legends. According to Sherman Carmichael in his book “Mysterious Georgia,” on page 87, an area along State Road 96 East, across the Ocmulgee River, is home to a place called Gravity Hill. At the intersection of Route 129, turn left and continue to the bottom of the second hill on this road. When you arrive, put your vehicle in neutral, and you will suddenly begin to roll uphill.

While several sites across the country have these spots where you defy gravity, this place has an eerie legend of an old witch tied to it that will raise the hair on your neck.

The legend claims that a witch is buried near this hill, approximately 300 yards away. Some believe the old grave marked with a pile of stones roughly five feet high in the middle of the swamp is her grave. It is said the old witch couldn’t be buried in holy ground in a church cemetery, so the people disposed of her lifeless body here.

Legend has it that the witch extracted a toll from travelers on this road more than two hundred years ago. If they paid, she would allow them to cross the hill.
