The Demon Dog of Valle Crucis

Legend has it that a hellhound visits the grounds of Saint John’s Episcopal Church off Highway 194 in Valle Crucis, North Carolina, when the sun goes down. Why? Nobody seems to know. Valle Crucis is Latin for Valley of the Cross because of the three mountain streams that come together, forming the shape of a cross. The place holds spiritual significance and blessing despite the alleged creature lurking in the shadows of the church cemetery.

Some reports go back years about a demon dog the size of a man who hangs around the old church at night, describing the monster as having yellow teeth and glowing eyes. What’s more alarming than its size is its speed, keeping up with vehicles that have attempted to evade the beast, with speeds ranging between sixty and eighty miles an hour.

Eventually, there is a point where the hellhound stops dead in its tracks when pursuing cars, and legend says it’s where the bridge allows you to pass over the cross below, which is right where the mountain streams come together.
