The Ghost of Suzy Still Walks This Western North Carolina Road Looking For Help

We are staying in Western North Carolina for this next ghostly tale in the small community of Dillsboro, near Cherokee. The intersection heading to Dick’s Creek, approximately a mile or so from town, is the site of a deadly carriage accident in the early 1800s.

Legend says that on a warm August evening, a school teacher named Suzy and her son were traveling home when they lost control of their horse-drawn buggy in a sharp curve, causing it and the horse to run off the side of the mountain.

Unfortunately, both died in the crash. According to local accounts, the ghost of Suzy walks the roadway today, looking for help.

When people stopped to ask if she needed a ride, Suzy would tell them she had been in a terrible accident and needed to get home for help.

The travelers never realized when she left the vehicle. They would continue the conversation, turn, and Suzy would be gone.
