Beneath the Waters of Lake Jocassee

Beneath the Waters of Lake Jocassee

Under the waters of Lake Jocassee are the remains of the Attakulla Lodge. It remained intact when the area was flooded to make way for the lake. We have covered the history of Lake Jocassee before, but we have never covered the actual lodge, which can only be reached by divers.

The lodge was built in the 1800s and opened for business in the early 1900s in the Jocassee Valley. It was a three-story bed-and-breakfast that housed fewer than 50 guests during the summer.

It was named for Cherokee Chief Attakullakulla (“Little Carpenter”). He was the father of the famed Princess Jocassee.

Today, it rests beneath the cold waters of Jocassee, history hidden from the world, forever gone.
