The unsolved homicide of Carolyn Potter still looms over the northern South Carolina town of Campobello like a blanket of thick fog from the nearby mountains. Life moves a little slower around the mountain town, and in the early 1980s, someone being murdered was unthinkable.
The Potters had recently relocated from North Carolina to South Carolina after Hollie Potter landed a job at the Inman Quarry in Spartanburg County. It wouldn’t be long after the Potters arrived in the Upstate before tragedy struck the family.

On August 15, 1983, Carolyn Potter was reportedly home alone while Hollie was at work. Sometime during that window of time, someone came into the couple’s residence at Hillside Park and murdered Carolyn. Many unknowns exist about the crime, but it was reported that Potter was beaten to death.
The family had only lived at their new home for a week when Potter was found deceased at the property. Someone knows something. Reportedly, Carolyn was home alone at the time of the attack. It remains a cold case.
It has been 42 years since Potter was found, and she deserves justice. If you have information regarding this case, or lived in that neighborhood during the time that Carolyn Potter was murdered, please call Sgt. Tony Brown with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office at (864) 503-4556 or email him at tbrown@spartanburgcounty.org.
