The Gentle Woman of the Mist, also known as The Princess of the Mist, is a Western North Carolina legend tied to the Calvary Churchyard in Fletcher. The legend says that many years ago, a young man and woman, who lived on neighboring plantations, fell in love and became engaged. One night, the two had plans to meet and discuss their upcoming wedding. She waited until late in the night, waiting for him, but he never showed.
It’s said that he disappeared forever somewhere near the old Calvary Church. Soon after, the heartbroken woman died, and ever since her death, on certain nights, she searches the grounds for her lover. People have stated seeing the ghostly lover in a frock coat and wing collar walking the same paths just ahead of his searching fiancé.
