On July 9, 1918, in Nashville, Tennessee, the deadliest rail disaster in American history occurred when two passenger trains collided head-on. Over 100 people died, and 171 people were injured in the collision.
The cause was a combination of human error and a lack of safety systems in place at that time.
That same year, another disaster happened, known as the Malbone Street Wreck in Brooklyn, New York.
1918 is considered the worst year in history for rail travel.
