Headless Annie of Black Mountain

Headless Annie is one of Harlan County’s most famous ghost stories in southeastern Kentucky. The legend dates back to the 1930s, when the coal mining industry was filled with violence and conflict. During this time, mining companies began intimidating and attacking employees who voiced support for better working conditions and unionization.

The story goes that a young girl, named Annie, and her mother were brutally murdered in front of Annie’s father. The father was a local miner who was a leading advocate for change. The men forced him to watch the heinous act, and then proceeded to kill him.

After the murders, people began to see a headless spirit wandering the foggy, desolate roads of Black Mountain.  People have described her as a woman in white, headless, but aware of those who pass her. Some have claimed to have been chased and even seen her appear in their rearview mirrors, before vanishing into thin air.
