Many are familiar with the paranormal hotspot, Helen’s Bridge in Asheville, North Carolina, but there is another story of “Helen”, near Arden in the Royal Pines section, that you may not know.
Both stories are similar, and, yes, people believe the one in Royal Pines was the first ghostly tale, and it was eventually moved to a more convenient location in Asheville, so explorers wouldn’t have to drive miles to get a fright.
The lesser-known ghost story dates to the early 1800s, which involved a woman named Helen and her daughter, who lived in a cabin in this region. According to local lore, a man had broken into the home one evening, as Helen and her daughter were inside. Some stories suggest that he was up to no good, which led to a struggle inside. A kerosene lantern fell to the floor, setting the cabin ablaze.
According to legend, the woman and daughter perished in the blaze. And, some believe the spirit of Helen still walks the mountainside, searching for her daughter.
Some listed online that a mountain in that area is named “Helen’s Mountain” in Royal Pines.
