The 1983 Cold Case of Russell Anthony and Lisa Thompson

Kershaw is a small town nestled in Lancaster County, South Carolina.  Life moves at a slower pace, and everyone seems to know each other, like in other small rural towns across the state. So, when this double homicide occurred, it left the 2,000 residents who call Kershaw home and those in Lancaster County speechless.

In May 1983, Russell Anthony picked up his friend, Lisa Thompson, at her family’s home. The pair drove off in Anthony’s 1974 Chevrolet sedan.

In the early morning hours of May 15, 1983, around 2 a.m., the same Chevy Malibu was found engulfed in flames in nearby Heath Springs. Inside the car were Russell Anthony and Lisa Thompson. The two were found deceased.

According to NBC News from June 9, 2024, “The sheriff told Dateline that new persons of interest have recently been discovered and are currently being investigated. He added that the most recent information developed is ‘very promising.”

It has been 42 years since Russell Anthony and Lisa Thompson drove off on that late spring night in Anthony’s vehicle. The case remains unsolved and cold.

If you have information on the Lisa Thompson and Russell Anthony case, please call the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office at 803-283-3388.
