The Lady in White at Pack’s Tavern

Western North Carolina is a beautiful place, with plenty of history and tons of haunted locations. Every time I ask, Where do you want more ghostly stories from? ” This region is always number one.

Pack’s Tavern at 20 S Spruce Street in Asheville, North Carolina, is in a charming historic building that dates back to 1907. It was built one year after Will Harris went on his murder spree there, after he escaped the chain gang in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Asheville has a tunnel system that lies just below the streets, which is not well-known. They are considered Prohibition tunnels, and if you visit Pack’s Tavern, down in the basement of the building, you will see one of the tunnels, sealed off.

General Manager Tyler Brown at Pack’s Tavern told me of an unfortunate incident that occurred in that part of the tunnel in 1915. Remember, Prohibition in Asheville started sooner than in other places.

A wife had visited the building looking for her husband. As she made her way down to the tunnel under the building Pack’s Tavern is currently in, she found her husband in the tunnel having a stiff drink. The woman threatened to call the police if he didn’t leave the premises. The man refused, pulled out a gun, and murdered his wife, where the basement and employee floor are today.

Her apparition has been seen many times in that area. Even Tyler has seen the “Lady in White” in the past. He and others have heard singing and humming, and toilets flushing.

If you’re in Asheville, stop by Pack’s Tavern and have a spirit or two; who knows, you may even see The Lady in White when you visit.
