The Dorothea Dix Cemetery

The graveyard at Dorothea Dix Park is a cemetery located at 759-777 Dawkins Drive, serves as the final resting place for many patients who were treated at the Dorothea Dix Hospital, North Carolina’s first psychiatric hospital, situated on Dix Hill in Raleigh, North Carolina. The hospital was established sometime around 1856 and cared for thousands of patients during its existence, until it closed in 2012.

When the hospital was first established, it was reportedly known as the “Insane Asylum of North Carolina.” Still, it was later renamed to honor Dorothea Dix, a passionate advocate for the mentally ill who played a key part in establishing the hospital.

Unfortunately, like the many other hospitals we have written about in the past, many died inside and were laid to rest in that cemetery.

Some claim that you can still hear screams from the deceased patients at night echoing from the cemetery.
