The Gray Lady at the Mordecai House

The Mordecai House was built around 1785, making it older than Raleigh, North Carolina, by seven years. Five generations of the Mordecai family lived in the home, and in the 1960s, the house was sold to the city.

Legend has it that the grounds are home to more than one ghost. A piano from the 1800s still sits inside, and every so often, the sound from the piano dances off the walls. But there’s only one problem: no one is seated at the bench playing.

Mary Willis is often considered the resident specter that haunts the Mordecai House, who died in the early 1900s. It is believed she passed somewhere in the home, but it’s not known which room Willis took her last breath in.

People have reported seeing a woman dressed in 19th-century garb wandering the hallways inside, and reportedly, she can also be seen standing on the balcony if you should pass by late at night.

Others have seen a gray, mist-like substance hovering over the old piano. The other ghost is believed to be that of Margaret Mordecai.
