The ghostly legend of the abandoned “High House” Part 2

Sometime around 1822, Jones Left North Carolina and William’s ancestors moved into the High House, where they began having dreams about a hidden treasure.

One night, a voice appeared to Leander Williams in a dream, revealing a secret treasure hidden in the fireplace. Reportedly, the same voice also visited William’s mother. During the 1700s and 1800s, it was not uncommon for families to bury treasure, especially on their land. We have written about many of these through the years. But this treasure was never found.

The cemetery was recently found, tucked away in Cary. North Carolina neighborhood. Perhaps this find will help to bring closure to the “High House” buried treasure.

Over the years, many ghost stories have centered around the High House and its grounds. Some believe the wood surrounding the old home is haunted.

One woman went missing and was reportedly found possessed. Another tragic tale is the death of Mrs. Jones in 1806.

The Raleigh Register reported the following on Mrs. Jones’ disappearance and death, “” was found in a grove, depraved of all reason, where it is supposed she had been praying (having been very religious for some time past). She remained in a deplorable condition till her death.”

Many unexplained and tragic deaths have occurred on the property, from accidental drownings and even shootings. One woman was reportedly strangled to death by her lover while the pair watched horse-racing.

People who have ventured to the old grounds where the High House once stood have reported seeing shadows, spirits, and a ghostly woman, who was said to haunt the old plantation.

The ghostly woman is reportedly not very friendly, and few tales of her date to the 1860s and 1870s. One story says a little girl woke in the middle night wanting a drink of water. Her father walked onto to the porch to get her water, when they saw the woman standing in the front yard. They rushed back inside, and left abruptly the next morning.

Many believe the High House and the haunted woods stood on the corner of Maynard Road and High House Road, where a stretch of Greenway runs into the woods.
