In the early 1990s, the Lowcountry of South Carolina was under attack by a serial rapist. The man who would eventually become known as the alleged “Lowcountry Rapist” was Duncan Proctor, who led law enforcement on a high-speed chase, eventually crashing his vehicle.
Proctor was paralyzed and suffered brain damage in the June 1992 crash. Proctor’s wife first turned the man into law enforcement after she provided key information as soon as she suspected her husband was the rapist who stalked residents from 1990 until 1992.
Her information led to the capture of Duncan Proctor.
Proctor was linked to as many as 27 rapes that occurred over a two-year window in Charleston and Dorchester Counties.
The search for the serial rapist reportedly cost at least $1 million and involved hundreds of police officers, with two officers dying in a helicopter crash during the search.
