The Girl in Blue of Highway 5

The story of “The Girl in Blue” is one ghostly tale that isn’t readily available online or in books. This stretch of road between York, South Carolina, and Blacksburg can be an eerie spot, especially late at night. Through the years, people have reported seeing the ghostly lady walking alongside the road, and it often ends with her disappearing into thin air.

How events led to her being forever trapped here. I had to go back to an article from 1989 to find the tale. The renowned Dr. Bobby Moss recounts the story in a GoUpstate article, including how he came face-to-face with “The Girl in Blue” on a spring day.

As a teenager, Bobby Moss was traveling down Highway 5 toward Kings Creek in his truck when he passed a young girl wearing a light-colored dress with blue flowers, with her boots in hand. The young lady walked along the shoulder of the road on that spring day. Dr. Moss slowed his truck as he passed her, hoping he would recognize her and offer a ride. The young lady vanished when Dr. Moss turned to look in his rearview mirror.

Dr. Moss continued driving until he reached the Kings Creek store to tell the owner what he had just observed. The owner said, `Oh, you’ve seen the girl in blue!’ Throughout the years, Dr. Moss returned, hoping to catch another glimpse of the ghostly lady in blue, but he never saw her again.

Legend says the young lady, believed to have been around 18 years old at the turn of the century, was head over heels in love with a young man. However, her father disapproved of the relationship. One day, she traveled into town to purchase a blue dress with flowers and a pair of shoes, as it was her birthday. On the way home, she carried the boots in her hand as she made her way to the Kings Creek bridge to meet her handsome boyfriend. It is believed that her father took his gun to use as a scare tactic since he was upset that she disobeyed his orders. The angry father had planned to fire a warning shot over her head, intending to frighten her to come back home, but the man tripped as he fired the weapon and killed his daughter instead.
