On October 25, 1994, Susan Smith reported to law enforcement that she had been the victim of a carjacking by a black man in Union County, South Carolina. Smith was driving a 1990 Mazda Protégé with her two sons, Michael Daniel and Alexander Tyler, strapped in the back seat, at the time of the report. The case made national news, and for the next nine days, Smith made dramatic pleas for the safe arrival of her two children.
What happened next can only be described as demonic.

Following an intensive investigation and a nationwide search to locate the children, Smith confessed on November 3, 1994, to doing the unthinkable, when she let her car roll into a nearby John D. Long Lake, with the boys in the car, killing them both.
The car was found 122 feet from the shore in the murky waters of the lake.
In November 2024, Susan Smith apologized to a seven-person parole board for the murders, while requesting her freedom. Smith muttered, “I know what I did was horrible. And I would give anything so I could change it.”
Smith was denied parole and is currently imprisoned at Leath Correctional Facility in Greenwood County.
