Did a UFO visit Chester in the summer of 1997? Some believers say yes. The rare anomaly occurred twenty-six years ago, over a field near the J.A. Cochran Bypass. The large craft hovered as onlookers sat in their stopped vehicles. One person said, “I was in a vehicle with some friends leaving a pool party. People were just stopped in the middle of the bypass, looking. It felt like it just hovered over that field for minutes, and then it started moving again. It went across the bypass towards Highway 72, and it was gone.”
The next morning, news agencies broke the story of the unidentified flying object. Reports surfaced of sightings in North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The Lantern took photos of the field where the alleged encounter occurred.
