The Legend of Old Green Eyes

If you love Civil War history mixed with ghostly stories, this next tale is for you.

The “Legend of Old Green Eyes” is believed to be the ghost of a Confederate soldier, who met his demise in the bloody battle that occurred at Chickamauga, just outside of Chattanooga on September 19-20, 1863, which resulted in 34,000 casualties.

Ghostly sightings in this part of the country are not uncommon, and the ghost of “Old Green Eyes,” said to haunt the grounds, ranges from that of a Confederate soldier to a green-eyed panther to an actual cryptid that is half man and half monster.

How did this legend begin?

The backdrop to the tale says that during this fierce battle, a young Confederate soldier was beheaded by a cannonball. Today, the spirit of the man still frantically searches the battlefield for his lost head.

One of the earliest ghost sightings occurred right after the Civil War and is documented in Susie Blaylock McDaniel’s book “The Official History of Catoosa County.
