Zombieland in Newberry County

When people think of zombies, they often envision a rural setting, such as a farm or cemetery, and characters like Rick Grimes, Negan, and Daryl Dixon, who fight to survive. Seldom do we hear about real places, especially in the backwoods of South Carolina, with such a name.

Driving the winding country roads of Newberry County, South Carolina, in the township of Maybinton, leads to the heart of several paranormal hotspots. Sound familiar? The Hound of Goshen is known to wreak havoc on motorists, and Crybaby Bridge is nearby.

Located on Brazelmans Road, on the grounds of the former Ebenezer Methodist Church, is a cemetery with this moniker. Some believe it dates back to the 1970s, when monster movies dominated South Carolina’s drive-in theaters.

The old church that occupied this space was rich in history, having been built in 1848, with two other structures predating it, dating back to 1784. Unfortunately, the church was either torn down or destroyed in 1974. Sadly, many tombstones have been broken over the years, some with Masonic markings.

One grave in the cemetery is allegedly marked with a future date. If you venture, please obey all laws and help preserve our history, or you may come face to face with South Carolina’s oldest ghost story, the Happy Dog.
