One road in Brunswick County, North Carolina, has quite a reputation. Leland, just outside of Wilmington, has a road named Mount Misery. With a name like that, you’d think there has to be some story behind it, and it does.
Several legends suggest how it received the unique name, but one says that many years ago, enslaved men and women were taken from the nearby port and forced to walk 90 miles to Fayetteville. Additionally, many were sick and could not make the long journey, and eventually died along this route.
Misery often breeds ghostly tales, and people have reported hearing late-night sounds of moaning or clanking of chains and singing, seeing strange people along the road dressed in odd clothing, and strange lights in the woods.
