One of the oldest buildings in Savannah, Georgia, if not the oldest, is The Pirates’ House Restaurant. It was built in 1734 as a house, and some believe that some of the unsavory characters who have passed through its doors over the years may still be inside.
Later, as Savannah transformed into a seaport town, the old home became an inn, which catered to sailors after they reached the New World by sea. A few pirates are also said to have entered the old residence.
Underneath the restaurant is the rum cellar, which connects to a tunnel that leads out to the Savannah River, where men were allegedly kidnapped after a few stiff drinks to work the open waters. The last thing they probably remembered was staring into the bottom of their pint of booze and waking up the next day with a severe headache while handcuffed to a ship.
Another spirit that is said to haunt The Herb House, which is connected to the restaurant, is that of a little boy. He has blonde hair, wears a white shirt, and often appears on the staircase.
Another spirit that reportedly haunts the establishment is the woman in the blue dress. She has been seen walking past patrons dressed in an 18th-century dress.
And, of course, many believe the spirits of the sailors who passed through these doors many years ago are still inside.
All ghosts aside, I hear this restaurant is a Must-Visit while in Savannah. You may even get to meet one of these former guests.
