The Legend of Julia Legare

Just up the coast from Savannah is Edisto Beach, South Carolina, and the tomb of Julia Legare. It’s a sad tale of a young woman who met her fate in 1852. Legare was visiting family and vacationing when she suddenly fell ill from diphtheria and slipped into a coma.

After weeks of waiting to see if Julia would pull through, her body was laid to rest in a mausoleum of a local family after she was pronounced dead.

Following the death of a family member or friend, the tomb was reopened for internment, but behind the crypt door were decayed remains of Julia Legare. It was determined and apparent that a grave mistake was made; Julia had woken from her coma to find herself trapped and had been buried alive.

Through the years, people and caretakers would visit to find the door to the crypt open. Some say that Julia Legare stands guard to make sure she is never trapped behind the door that claimed her life so many years ago.
