The I-85 Median Cemetery in Cherokee County

Here is something else you may not be aware of. There is a graveyard between the northbound and southbound lanes near exits 95 and 96 in Cherokee County on Interstate 85. Nicknamed the I-85 Median Cemetery, the Lipscomb-Sarratt Cemetery dates to 1799.

According to a goupstate article dated April 29, 2001, “The graves are about 200 yards north of Exit 95. The cemetery is approximately 100 yards long, situated between the northbound and southbound lanes. The Ross-Lipscomb Cemetery is one of the oldest in Cherokee County.

The peaceful land on a small hill was perfect for sending loved ones to their eternal rest. That is, until I-85 was built in the late 1950s. Many ask why the graves are still in the median. “Our policy is that we don’t like to disturb the sites if we don’t need to,” said Ken Myers, planning and environmental engineer for the Federal Highway Administration, in the same article.

The plot of land is between two lanes on busy I-85. For safety reasons, we advise against visiting. Did you know about this forgotten South Carolina cemetery?
