Tucked away in the rolling hills of the South Carolina Upcountry, in Greenville County, is a cemetery with a reputation for being haunted. If you decide to visit, you may be surprised to find that the grounds are now situated in the same parking lot as a Walmart Neighborhood Market, located right behind a dental office and just a few feet away from a Walmart Fuel Station. I fully support placing Legend and Lore markers at these sites to protect them from future development.
The Duncan Chapel Methodist Cemetery is the official name, but locals often refer to it as the Children’s Cemetery or graveyard. It is near Furman University on Old Buncombe Road.
It is a sad tale, as the grounds were once overgrown with weeds and broken headstones. Many of the graves date from the mid-to-late 1800s and are now situated in a fenced-in area on a hill.
People have reported feeling uneasy or disoriented when visiting. Others have experienced uncontrolled emotions, heard the laughter of children playing, and seen a black mist, as well as witnessed other strange occurrences.
