The Ghostly Woman of 312 Main

Greenwood, South Carolina, has many haunted locations, but most tales are confined to those who are aware of them. Author Marjorie Lanelle did a fantastic job in her book Ghost Stories of Uptown Greenwood. You can purchase a copy on Amazon if you’d like one.

On pages 43 to 46, Lanelle recounts the story of 312 Main Street in Greenwood and the ghostly woman said to haunt this historic building. A female employee who worked in the building once told Lanelle her story of coming face-to-face with the apparition when she was tasked with cleaning the upstairs of the building for overtime. The employee walked the steps that morning, often turning around since she sensed something was staring at her. Once in the attic, she found an old portrait, its front facing the wall. When she turned it around, she instantly recognized the woman, as she had seen her periodically while she was employed there. The sun lit the upstairs as dust particles danced before her face. Quickly, she surveyed the room from one side to the other.

At that precise moment, the woman could be seen neatly dressed, never saying a word, with her hands clasped in front of her stomach. The employee tripped while trying to escape the above space and then rushed back down the steps. Soon, other employees began to trickle in to start their assigned shifts. The employee tried to keep her composure to avoid scaring the other employees about what she had just encountered and went to the bathroom to freshen up.

While washing her hands, she glanced in the mirror to observe the ghostly woman staring back at her.

That employee quickly found work elsewhere and never returned to 312 Main Street.
