A spot near Dillon in Latta is said to be haunted by the ghost of a man hit by a train in the late 1800s or early 1900s. There are at least two different stories behind Bingham’s Light. The first says a farmer named John or Bill Bingham met their demise by a train one night while on the railroad tracks. The specter now haunts the fields with his trusty lantern, helping to illuminate his path home.
Another tale says the man murdered several people and used his lantern to find suitable plots of land to bury them at night. No matter which story you believe, it is a hair-raising place late at night when you see the glow of his lantern swinging from one side to another on the horizon. If you should visit and not see old man Bingham, scream his name a few times into the distance. The Pee-Dee region is flat and will carry your message through the wind on cold days. Some have described the glow as a white or blue light. He will be right out to greet you with a blood-stained smile.
