According to multiple online sites, the Roanoke Island Inn in Manteo is home to a popular legend. Constructed in the 1860s by Asa Jones and his wife Martha, the historic inn overlooks the scenic Roanoke marshes. Today, it serves as a quaint bed and breakfast welcoming travelers to the coast. However, legend has it that the ghost of Roscoe Jones never left and still haunts this landmark.

Roscoe was a former owner of the premises and a member of the Wilson family. He also served as postmaster for the town for many years. One day, he received notice that he was released from his job with the U.S. Postal Service. Roscoe fell into a state of depression and shut off from the outside world, isolating himself inside. Shortly after losing his position, Roscoe passed away.
Residents allegedly began to notice his spirit not long after his death. He was wearing his postal uniform and leaving and entering the front door of the building. Guests have reported hearing footsteps upstairs, blinds that move up and down, radios turning on and off, and other strange occurrences.
