The Ghostly Legend of Alice Flagg

Alice Flagg is a famous South Carolina ghost story. Her final burial spot has been a topic of debate for years. In contrast, others claim she is buried 17 miles away in Murrells Inlet. Some believe that she still walks underneath the oak trees to this day and reportedly pulls at rings worn by others, still searching for the ring that was given to her by her fiancé at this cemetery in Pawleys Island. Still, it is said that the stone is just a commemorative piece, while others claim that another Alice is buried there.

The story began in 1849 when a fifteen-year-old Alice fell in love despite the disapproval of her brother, a local doctor, and family. Alice’s brother demanded that the young girl return the ring, but she placed it on a ribbon and wore it around her neck so it would be close to her heart.

Alice was sent to a boarding school in nearby Charleston to get away from her fiancé, but she ultimately fell ill while there. Her brother was to have brought her back home, and she passed away a few days later. Reportedly, her brother snatched the ring and threw it into the creek. Others say she passed while in Charleston.
