The Ghostly Hunter’s Store in Pendleton

In the beautiful town of Pendleton, in the Upstate of South Carolina, near Clemson University, sit many older, historic buildings on a small town square. It is a picturesque community known for its beauty and southern charm. However, one building reportedly has a ghostly legend attached to it, dating back to the late 1800s.

Hunter’s Store began operations as a general store in 1850. The story goes that a drunken gentleman who was a close friend of the Hunter boys fell from a horse into Six and Twenty Creek, while another story says Eighteen Mile Creek, and was taken to this location to hide from his wife. They left him overnight to dry off and sober up. But this South Carolina spring day proved to be a cold one that no one expected. The man froze to death during the night in the caretaker’s room near an open window.

To this day, his apparition has been spotted inside the building. Some have detailed encounters with unidentified men online. Others have reported hearing footsteps and movement upstairs when no one else is in the building. According to online reports, all the noises originate from the second floor, and all sightings have been reported on the first. Some have even suggested seeing the man dressed in an old-fashioned black suit as he comes down the stairs.

Today, the building serves as a local independent bookstore and art gallery. The picture below shows the room where the man allegedly met his fate.
