According to Author Tally Johnson’s book Ghosts of the South Carolina Upcountry, one road in Lancaster County is reportedly haunted in the Pleasant Plain community.
According to locals, Josh Log Road has a rich history, and some believe the ghost of a blind, elderly black man named Josh, who played the fiddle, still walks the roadside today.
Josh was the community mascot, accompanied by his pet bulldog, whom all the neighbors adored. In the years following the Civil War, they would often bring him food and check on his needs. One day, a stranger ventured into the community and stumbled across Josh. Thinking he must have some wealth stored somewhere, he reportedly beat the man to death after attempting to locate his nonexistent wealth. The stranger fled the scene ahead of the posse that formed.
After his death, people began to see an old black man with snow-white hair near the old oak log and hear fiddle music after dark.
Is Josh’s ghost still playing his music along Josh Log Road today?
