Columbia is full of spirits —the good ones that you find in Five Points or the bad ones that you see crossing a historic bridge said to be haunted by a ghostly hitchhiker. The Gervais Street Bridge is said to be haunted by a woman who was killed in the 1940s trying to make her way across. A better-known story is of a ghostly hitchhiker seen at night. The young woman is trying to find her way back to the Upstate but reaches her final destination instead. Some who have stopped to help say she is very talkative before disappearing into the front seat. If you’re driving across it, please watch for the ghostly girl needing a ride.
