Charleston, South Carolina, is a beautiful city, nicknamed The Holy City, with many alleged haunted locations. Many are familiar with the more famous paranormal hotspots around the city, like the Old Jail, the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, White Point Gardens, Church Street, and the Pink House, but did you know about this famous hidden cemetery near the busy downtown area, with ties to one of the best writers and poets of all time?
The Unitarian Cemetery, located at 8 Archdale Street, is both beautiful and historic. The pathways that lead to the old graves are maintained for visitors, but the plots and grave markers of the deceased have been given over to nature. Many claim the cemetery is haunted and believed to be the subject of one of Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous poems: Annabel Lee. Some have speculated that she is the Lady in White who haunts the premises today.

Another story revolves around Mary Bloomfield. It is said that her husband departed for Boston one night for business. Mrs. Bloomfield loved him dearly, and when he failed to return, she became depressed and died from a broken heart. People have claimed to see her wandering the paths of the Unitarian Cemetery, searching for her husband.
The next time you visit Charleston, please take a moment to pay your respects. You may see Poe’s Annabel or the other spirits that roam Charleston’s night air in search of love.
