We know this place from the numerous billboards that greet visitors with catchy slogans within a hundred-mile radius, or from physically stopping here near the North Carolina and South Carolina border in Dillon. If you have traveled to the Grand Strand, there is an excellent chance that you passed South of the Border.
You can say what you want, but South of the Border has built a brand and a destination since it opened in 1949.
One place on the premises believed to be haunted is the Motor Inn. Sherman Carmichael wrote about it on page 52 of his “Strange South Carolina” book, and it is also featured on websites like GhostQuest.
Carmichael quickly points out that there is no immediate reason why the motel would be experiencing a haunting since it was not constructed over a cemetery, and no one has died there. However, some point to room 305 as the hotspot.
According to Carmichael, people have reported strange power outages, doors that refuse to unlock, and animals behaving erratically, with ghostly figures appearing in the room.
According to John G. Clark Jr of The Lantern, “I actually called to inquire about the room in question and was told that it’s currently being used for storage, and the young lady I spoke with had also heard the allegations.
If this is true, it sounds like Pedro’s Pleasure Dome is the spot to stop.
