Haunted Hurricane Mills

Many stories have been written about the alleged hauntings of Loretta Lynn’s home and surrounding land in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. The Lynns purchased the 3,500-acre property in 1966 or 1967, depending on the source. Indeed, it was not a bad accomplishment for the young girl born and raised in Butcher Hollow, across the state line in Kentucky.

Lynn and her family’s home was built before the Civil War, and the property changed hands many times before it was acquired by the Anderson family around thirty years after the war.

It should be added that the property was used as a Federal Stockade during the Civil War. Other buildings on the property were used as hospitals and morgues during this time. In 1864, General Nathan Bedford Forrest commanded a bombardment here that lasted around forty minutes. However, it proved successful, as they destroyed gunboats, eight steamboats, eighteen barges, and all the storage warehouses.

When Lynn purchased the home, she discovered its rich history. Confederate soldiers, mysterious women, and even the previous owner, Anderson, are said to walk the floors and grounds still.

It was reported that one visitor to the estate saw a Confederate officer making his way across the bridge that crossed the small waterway to the house. Within a few seconds, he disappeared.

Another stumbled upon two Rebel soldiers sitting around a campfire.

Even Loretta had many stories of hearing footsteps across the front porch, but the unseen person or spirit never knocked. A few moments later, they heard chains rattling from under the porch.

Loretta’s children also allegedly had ghostly encounters in the basement of the house.

Is Hurricane Mills one of the most haunted places in Tennessee?
